Progetto CMR joins “2013 EU-China Urbanization Partnership Forum”

On the background of the EU-China Urbanization Partnership launched in May 2012 in Brussels, the European Commission and the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) organized the 2013 EU-China Urbanization Partnership Forum, held in Beijing on 21 November. The Forum represented a milestone in the relationship between Europe and China in the field of sustainable urbanization, promoting active cooperation between European and Chinese cities in a series of key sectors. The forum saw the participation of international and local institutional representatives, who shared their views on fundamental themes in the urban process like smart cities, low-carbon development and mobility. Arch. Giovanna Rossato, Senior Project Architect at Progetto CMR, delivered a speech in the “Innovative City” sub-forum, showing to the audience how urban planners and local leaders can design today the cities of tomorrow. The China’s City Of Tomorrow can be shaped using the principles of the “Smart city”, “Compact City” and “Slow City”: a new, holistic and comprehensive approach is needed, in order to reach greater integration between urban and rural areas and to avoid urban sprawl. In the meanwhile, urbanization can not be referred to as “sustainable” without taking into account human and historic dimensions of cities, which clearly needed to be preserved and enhanced.

The Forum was officially closed by the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and the EU Commission President Barroso, who both stressed the relevance of the mutual cooperation between the two sides. Premier Li Ke Qiang along his speech mentioned that China is now living a new path of urbanization. China could and should learn from other countries experiences but it has its own process based on peculiar national condition. He highlights as this process should be based on harmonious development between man and nature and man should be the focal point of this process.

We are really enthusiastic about this vision because it fully matches with our vision of sustainable development and design.
