Massimo Bagnasco speaks at The 1st EU-China Innovation Cooperation

Following the Joint Declaration on the European Union – China Innovation Cooperation Dialogue signed on the occasion of the 15th EU-China Summit last year, the 1st meeting of the EU-China Innovation Cooperation Dialogue took place in Beijing on 21 November 2013. The meeting saw the participation of high level EU and Chinese government representatives and stakeholders in the innovation area.

Mr Massimo Bagnasco had the honor to deliver a speech to the highly selected participants, focusing their attention on some essential issues related to innovation and standardization. He first offered some suggestions on how local government could improve some of its practices in order to maximize the return in terms of benefits for the society and of its economic and technological progress, calling for the need for predictable, transparent and effective framework conditions related to innovation. Then he illustrated which contributions European companies can give to their Chinese counterparts to promote innovation in urbanization, like the strengthening of foreign sustainable investment in the real estate market by introducing more special economic zones to boost the local economy, and the revision of building codes, standards and performance evaluation to allow for flexibility and evolution in the implementation of advanced construction materials.

In the end, the two sides committed to continue to promote research and innovation both in Europe and in China, and to work on lowering barriers to innovation and on balanced research cooperation.
